Cushion Vs. Pneumatic Forklift Tires
As a rule of thumb:
Pneumatic tires are used for indoor use and pneumatic tires for outdoor use.
Heavy duty tires are designed for warehouse pavements or outdoor light use (asphalt only).
A pneumatic forklift has more ground clearance than a truck with air-conditioned tires, allowing you to move more easily over gravel and other hard surfaces.
There are two types of tires: air or solid rubber.
Pneumatic tires are similar to the tires used on cars and other transportation vehicles.
A solid tire is the same as a pneumatic tire, but made of a harder rubber.
Solid tires are often used in areas where there is a lot of debris and cannot be fastened with nails, screws, etc.
This type of tire is commonly used in lumberyards, landfills, and construction sites and over the years has become the industry standard.
Should I use slick or traction tires?
In general, slick tires perform better on dry surfaces and can give you more rubber for the dollar spent.
If your workplace is exposed to moisture, traction tires are often a better choice.
If you use a forklift with padded tires outside, traction tires can provide better grip and help reduce the risk of tire “bulking”.
Caution:
Metal toothed wheels can damage tractor tires.
With traction traction, the teeth grip more and pull the leg.
Do not drive trailer tires on ramps with metal tiles.
The manufacturer’s warranty will not cover the damage.
Can I put pneumatic tires on a cushioned car?
Generally, the answer is no. Axles and tires are specific to the frame and lifting capacity of the forklift.
Forklift manufacturers design forklifts to operate safely with wheels and tires.
Exceptions to this rule are the Toyota 7FBE and 8FBE series forklifts. These types of pneumatics or tires with low flexibility can be installed on the forklift.
What about foam filling?
“Foam filler” is an alternative to solid tires and is often used to help prevent flat tires when using pneumatic tires in environments where your equipment is exposed to nails or other sharp objects.
Foams pads can also be used when solid tires are not available.
Foam fillings usually take 2-3 days to fill and harden.
Both foam filled and solid tires can be used on existing wheels.
Always follow the manufacturer’s specifications and the professional advice of your local dealer.
Can I use solid and pneumatic tires on the same forklift?
You can use solid tires in the front of the lift and air in the back, or vice versa.
You will use the same type of tire on the other side, drive and axles.
What air pressure should I use in my forklift tires?
The required air pressure is on the sidewall of the tire.
Special Forklift Tires
Fiberglass – Controversy causes the tire to heat up when used for a long or longer period of time.
Since the tire is mainly rubber, the temperature is not good.
This can affect the integrity of the forklift tires.
Fiberglass tires have great resistance to the effects of heat.
These tires are durable and suitable for use and look better.

Polyurethane – When a forklift is moving very heavy loads over long distances, polyurethane tires are a better choice than rubber.
These tires maintain their integrity very well and they are usually chemical resistant which is ideal for forklifts that will work in areas where chemicals are constantly falling on the ground.
Static Resistant – Some manufacturers use highly flammable or explosive materials.
Therefore, electricity should be reduced or avoided as much as possible, especially around sources of dust that are also flammable.
Anti-static tiles are available and specially designed to prevent static discharge in such areas.
Cold Weather – Temperature has a huge impact on the performance and life of forklift tires, and cold weather is no exception.
Cement and flat surfaces can easily collect ice and make it slippery.
The tires prepared cold and covered “walnut” provide the necessary traction for such environments, ensuring that the forklift can work as needed when carrying loads without risk.
Avoid cheap tires!
Inferior tires wear out faster than high-end products.
